Adults with no known eye problems should have a baseline comprehensive eye exam at age 40, then every 1–2 years depending on their risk factors. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of glaucoma, or a previously diagnosed eye condition, annual eye check-ups — or more frequent visits — are strongly recommended. Patients already being treated for glaucoma or retinal disease are typically seen every 3–6 months.

Yes — and as soon as possible. Diabetes can silently damage the blood vessels in your eyes, a condition called diabetic retinopathy, even before you notice any change in your vision. All patients newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes should have a dilated eye examination as soon as possible. Those with Type 1 diabetes should see an eye doctor within 5 years of diagnosis. After the first visit, annual screening is recommended even if your eyes appear normal. Keeping your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol well controlled also helps protect your vision.

Go to an eye clinic or emergency room right away if you experience any of the following:

• Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
• A sudden shower of new floaters (dark spots or threads in your vision)
• Flashes of light in your vision
• A dark curtain or shadow covering part of your vision
• Severe eye pain, especially with nausea or seeing halos around lights
• Any injury or trauma to the eye

These could be signs of a retinal detachment, acute glaucoma, or another sight-threatening emergency that requires same-day evaluation.

There is currently no cure for glaucoma, but vision loss is highly preventable with early detection and consistent treatment. Treatments such as eye drops, laser procedures, and surgery work by lowering the pressure inside the eye to protect the optic nerve and preserve your remaining vision. It is important to understand that damage to the optic nerve cannot be reversed once it occurs — this is why early diagnosis and regular follow-up with your eye doctor are so important.

Your first visit will include a detailed review of your medical and eye history, a vision test, glasses prescription check, eye pressure measurement, and a dilated eye examination — where we use eye drops to widen your pupils so we can thoroughly examine the back of your eye. Please note that these dilation drops will temporarily blur your near vision and make your eyes sensitive to light for about 4–6 hours, so it is best to bring a companion who can drive you home. Please also bring any previous eye records or test results, your current glasses or contact lenses, and a list of your current medications.
